Chaung Magyi Gr

Period:
Cambrian

Age Interval:
Early Cambrian

Province:
Myanmar Shan Region

Type Locality and Naming

Shan North Plateau, Shan mid-Plateau (Pyin Oo Lwin), Shan South Plateau, the Taungnima Marble near Kyaukse, [Original Publication: Barber, A. J., Khin Zaw & Crow, M. J. (eds) 2017. Myanmar: Geology, Resources and Tectonics. Geological Society, London, Memoirs, 48, 317-342]

Lithology and Thickness

Mong Long mica schists. Foliation in the Chaung Magyi Gr schists is steeply dipping, and the rocks are affected by low-grade regional metamorphism and are commonly folded in both tight and more open folds with an axial plane cleavage.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

This is the oldest unit in Shan North, Mid and South Plateaus.

Upper contact

Conformable with Pangyun Fm in Shan North Plateau, Conformable with Sibaing Orthoquartzite Fm in Shan mid-Plateau (Pyin Oo Lwin), Conformable with Pandung Fm in Shan South Plateau.

Regional extent

It is developed in the Shan North, Mid, South Plateaus.

GeoJSON

Fossils

Occurrence of a trilobite and several trace fossils (Garson et al. 1976).

Age

Neo-Proterozoic. Protoliths of the Mogok sediments are therefore considered to be of earlier Precambrian age (Bender 1983). However, the Taungnima Marble near Kyaukse, considered to be part of the Mogok Belt, contains Carboniferous fossils (Maung Thein & Soe Win 1970). Presence of trilobite, if verified, implies ca. Cambrian Stage 4 or younger.[Figure: Stratigraphical correlation of the Cambrian–Devonian rocks of Myanmar Shan region with those of northern Thailand and NW Malaysia. Asterisks indicate the levels at which fossils useful in correlation were found (after Aung&Cocks, 2017)]
